Birmingham Hip Resurfacing
What is Birmingham Hip Resurfacing and what does it involve?
In patients of arthritis, bones of the hip joint become rough and worn and they rub together causing, pain, swelling and swiftness.
BIRMINGHAM HIP Resurfacing is a surgical procedure which shields these worn surfaces in the joint with smooth, durable high carbide cobalt chrome.
The implant
The BIRMINGHAM HIP Resurfacing System implant has two parts:
- A metal cap is fitted over the top of the resurfaced femoral ball - in much the same way a metal crown is fitted over a resurfaced tooth.
- A corresponding metal socket or cup is fitted into the pelvic socket.
Now instead of grinding bone on bone, the resurfaced metal on metal hip joint glides with a smooth, natural motion.

What are the advantages of Birmingham Hip Resurfacing over traditional Arthroplasty?
Bone conservation is the greatest benefit of the BIRMINGHAM HIP Resurfacing System, especially for younger patients. The femoral head and femoral canal are preserved and there is no bone loss with future revision.
Unlike traditional hip replacement surgery, resurfacing does not remove as much of hip bones Instead, the process simply machines away the rough damaged surface of the hip joint bones and replaces them with more durable high carbide cobalt chrome.
For younger patients concerned with the potential of multiple revision surgeries over their lifetimes, saving natural bone is especially important. But hip bone conservation is good for older patients as well if their bones are b enough to accept the implant.

What are the disadvantages of hip resurfacing?
The primary disadvantage is that hip resurfacing is a relatively new technology compared to hip replacement, and therefore has not generated long-term clinical data.

What is the life of Hip resurfacing?
It is very difficult to say about the life of the Birmingham Hip Resurfacing as the procedure is quite new. It has been around for only 8.5 years and there is no long term data suggesting the life.
A clinical study showed the BIRMINGHAM HIP Resurfacing System had a survivorship of 98.4% at the five year mark, which is comparable with the survivorship of a traditional total hip replacement in the under-60 age group.
Besides, the life of implant varies with each patient depending upon the severity of disease, activity level and weight.
