Breast Augmentation
What is Breast Augmentation?
Breast augmentation is an aesthetic surgical procedure to enhance the size and shape of a woman's breast by inserting an artificial implant behind the breast.
What is a Breast Implant?
A breast implant is a soft shell or a rubber sac that is filled with silicone gel or saline (salt-water). The feel of the implant is very natural and close to the feel of the normal breast tissue. They are available in several different sizes to accommodate different patient's needs and surgeon's preference. The surface texture of the implant can be smooth or contoured.
Who can undergo Breast Augmentation surgery?
A healthy woman above 18 years of age who is not pregnant or breast feeding can undergo breast augmentation surgery.
How is Breast Augmentation performed?
Breast enlargement or augmentation is performed by making a space behind the breast, either behind or in front of the pectoral muscle and placing a breast implant (prosthesis) into this space. The implant can be inserted via the crease under the breast, through the nipple or through the armpit.
The surgeon makes an incision, creates a pocket either under the breast tissue or under the muscle, inserts the implant, pushes it to the center so that it is under the nipple and sutures the incision.
The surgery is individualized in relation to the type and size of the implant used, the anatomical space created and the placement of the scar. The choice will depend on the patient's bodily shape, her breast shape and size, her chest shape and her expectations. The breast tissue itself is not operated on. The implant is simply placed behind the breast to give it more projection and fullness.
Breast Augmentation surgery takes about 2 - 3 hours. The patient can go home the same day or the following day. The sutures are covered with a gauze dressing to promote speedy healing.
What results can I expect?
The outcome of Breast Augmentation is quite satisfactory and successful. A successful augmentation will give you fuller breasts that better proportion with your overall body size and physique. The procedure may also lead to reduced sagginess and increased firmness of the breasts.
How long it takes to recover from a Breast Augmentation?
Patients undergoing Breast Augmentation normally require complete rest for several days following the procedure. Normal activities can be resumed in 2-3 weeks although strenuous activities and exercise should be avoided for 6-8 weeks. Time taken to return to work varies and can be anywhere between 1-4 weeks.
Does the procedure leave any scars?
The advanced surgical techniques applied by plastic surgeons, designed to minimise all visible scarring. While some scarring is involved with breast augmentation, they are usually just a few centimetres long and are located in such a way as to become barely noticeable as they fade with time.
Are Breast Implants Safe?
Yes, the breast implants are completely safe. Many worldwide studies have shown that there appears to be no increased illness or systemic diseases caused by saline or gel implants.
Am I more likely to develop breast cancer as a result of Breast Augmentation?
No. medical science has shown that chances of developing breast cancer or any other disease are not changed by this procedure.
