Dentistry
The term Dentistry refers to evaluation, diagnosis, prevention,
and treatment of diseases, disorders and conditions affecting
the teeth, gums and maxillofacial (associated with the jaw
and face) region of the mouth.
Dentistry is the major sub science of Stomatology, a part
of medicine that relates to the mouth and its diseases.
Dentistry is widely considered necessary for complete overall
health. Ideally, dentistry is preventive. Dentists, strongly
recommend prevention of dental caries and other dental disorders
through proper hygiene (tooth brushing and flossing), fluoride,
and tooth polishing.
Indicure offers a wide range of dentistry procedures, ranging
from conventional dentistry treatments like caries removal
and root canal, to the latest cosmetic dental procedures like
dental implants and removable dental prostheses.

Orthodontics (Braces):
Orthodontics is the art of aligning the teeth and jaws to
improve the patient's smile and oral health.
The problems that can be treated or minimized with orthodontic
treatment are:
- Misaligned, crooked, or crowed teeth
- Missing teeth
- Extra teeth
- An overbite
- An under bite
- Misaligned or incorrect jaw position
- Disorder of jaw joint
It is recommended that an orthodontist see a child early.
If braces are needed, placement usually occurs between ten and
fourteen years old, although persons of any age can benefit
from treatment. The reason for getting the braces placed early
is due to the fact that the mouth and head are still growing
in young children and thus the braces can easily correct the
teeth.
The various types of Orthodontic braces used are:
- Conventional metallic braces
- Clear Braces
- Invisible Braces
Veneers:
Veneers are the most effective means to change or enhance
the look of stained, broken, chipped or undesired teeth. Veneers
have permanent effects and are generally used in the cosmetic
dentistry and they produce customized whitening results. When
applied over the surface of a tooth, Veneers can cover worn
tooth enamel, uneven tooth alignment or spacing and chips
or cracks.
Veneers are used to correct:
- Wear and tear of teeth
- Abnormal spacing
- Uneven teeth
- Worn enamel
Veneers are a thin shield of porcelain used to cover the front
surface of the teeth. They are generally of two types:
- Porcelain Veneers
- Composite Resin Veneers
Both the types of veneers can be fabricated by a dental technician
in a dental laboratory; composite veneers can even be fabricated
inside the mouth in the dentists' clinic.
Dental Veneers are superior in quality and aesthetically more
pleasing than tooth bonding, a procedure used for the same
purpose.
Crowns (Caps):
A crown is a tooth-shaped cover placed over a tooth that is
badly damaged or decayed. It is very similar in appearance
to the tooth. The other name commonly used for crowns is 'Cap'.
The crowns are generally indicated in cases where the tooth
has been broken or damaged a great deal by decay. As a result,
a filling can't be sufficient to work for the tooth.
This is a procedure whereby a damaged tooth is covered to
strengthen it. The tooth may have been damaged by decay, or
have a previous restoration that has fractured. Root canalled
teeth are also crowned if sufficient tooth is missing
The different types of crowns used are:
- Metallic
- Porcelain fused to metal
- Porcelain
The crowns can be prefabricated or made to order in the laboratory.
Dental Sealant:
Dental sealants are thin, plastic films painted on the chewing
surfaces of the back teeth -- molars and premolars -- and
are highly effective in the prevention of tooth decay (caries
and cavities).
The sealants are applied by initially cleaning the surface
of the tooth, rinsing the surface to remove all traces of
the cleaning agent, and drying the tooth. The surface of the
tooth is made rough by applying a solution to the surface
of the tooth, including the pits and grooves. The solution
is thoroughly rinsed away after a few minutes with water and
the site is dried. The liquid sealant is finally applied to
the site and allowed to harden.
Because the sealants act as a physical barrier to decay and
plaque build-up, in most cases, they provide 100 percent protection.
Dental implants:
An alternative to dentures, dental implants help to restore
the mouth that has little or no non-restorable teeth. Implants
help to reduce movement of dentures, bridges, and/or crowns,
facilitate proper chewing and provide support and improved
stability for removable dentures or fixed bridgework.
Types of dental Implants available:
- Endosteal Implants
- Subperiosteal
- Artificial Bone Substitute
Dental implants are very safe and do not pose any kind of
risk to individuals using them. The implants are made of biologically
compatible metals like Titanium and thus are readily acceptable.
Filling:
Teeth that have been affected by tooth decay (caries or cavities)
require a filling. The different types of fillings used are:
- Dental Amalgams or Silver fillings
- Composite Resins or White fillings.
Other alternatives to restoring damaged or decayed teeth:
- Porcelain veneers - a ceramic material is bonded to
the front of teeth to change the tooth's color, size, and/or
shape
- Crown - a "cap" that covers a cracked or
broken tooth, unfixed by a filling, to approximate its normal
size and shape
- Cast gold restorations - this type of restoration is
often more costly and may require more than one dental fitting
Root Canal:
Root canal therapy is done to correct disorders of the dental
pulp -- the soft tissue around the tooth that contains nerves,
blood vessels, and connective tissue.
General symptoms seen in cases of pulp disorders are:
- Pain in the tooth while chewing or biting
- Oversensitivity of the teeth with hot or cold drinks
- Swelling in face
The procedure involves removal of the pulp chamber of the tooth
and filling it with a suitable filling material. A root canal
is generally indicated in cases where the decay has reached
the nerve of the tooth or the tooth has become infected. It
is thus usually performed when the tooth cannot be filled or
restored any other way.
The procedure is generally spread over several visits to
assure the infected pulp and associated bacteria have been
adequately drained.
Denture:
Denture replaces missing tooth and its adjacent tissue with
a removable dental appliance made of acrylic resin and, in
some cases, a combination of metals.
There are four primary types of dentures:
- Complete
This type of denture replaces all of the teeth and their adjacent
tissues.
- Partial
Partial dentures act as dental bridges as they "bridge"
the gap between a missing tooth and teeth.
- Conventional
Conventional dentures allow a recovery time (usually 4 to
8 weeks) after all of the teeth is extracted before the dentures
are placed in the mouth.
- Immediate
This type of denture does not allow a healing period after
all of the teeth are removed. The denture is immediately fit
into the mouth after all teeth are removed. Additional adjustments
in the fitting of this type of denture procedure may be necessary
as healing occurs.
Bleaching:
Bleaching is a safe, effective way to lighten the color of
teeth.
The ideal candidates to benefit the most, from teeth whitening
are the individuals having age spots or yellow or orange spotting
on teeth caused by coffees, teas, berries and other foods,
or smoking.
Most bleaching treatment take two weeks; however; more time
may be needed in severely stained or discolored teeth.
Bridges:
A dental bridge is an appliance used to replace one or more
missing teeth.
These appliances are cemented into place and cannot be removed
by the patient.
Any individual having a missing tooth is a candidate for
Dental Bridge.
The different types of bridges used are:
- Traditional Bridge
- Cantilever Bridge
- Resin Bonded Bridge
The average life of most bridges is eight to ten years. It
is important for the individuals getting dental bridges implanted
to maintain good oral hygiene, for the bridges to last long.
Extraction:
An extraction is the removal of a tooth or teeth that is non-restorable,
non-useful, or harmful to the patient.
Periodontal Scaling:
Periodontal scaling is a procedure whereby a dentist or hygienist
removes the deposits-plaque or tartar, from under the gum
line. The procedure is usually performed under local anesthesia
so as to make the patient more comfortable. Many times it
can be performed in two to four visits depending upon the
amount of deposit present.
Posterior Porcelain Inlay/Onlay:
This is a highly aesthetic, non-metallic restoration that
is bonded on the prepared tooth to restore the beauty, strength
and function of the tooth.
