Face Lift
What is a Face Lift?
Face lift surgery, also known as Rhytidectomy, is a cosmetic surgical procedure that is used to reshape or contour the lower two-thirds of the face. Face lift reduces the visible signs of aging produced by gravity and loss of skin elasticity, from face and neck and provides tightening of the skin and muscles to improve cheek, jowl, and neck contour.
Face Lift can either be done alone or in conjunction with Blepheroplasty (Eyelid Surgery), Rhinoplasty (Nose Reshaping) or a Forehead Lift.
What is the correct age to get my first face lift?
There is no correct age for obtaining a face lift. The time for your first face lift is based on whether the lift can correct your concerns. As a general rule, patients today are obtaining face lifts earlier. Doing a face lift at a younger age (your 40's) will give you a more natural appearing and longer lasting result. Performing face lifts at a later age will provide more dramatic results since the needs are greater.
What are the outcomes of a face lift?
A lower face lift treats hanging skin on the neck, jowl and cheek area. Areas of the forehead, eyes, nose, upper and lower lip are not improved by the lower face lift procedure. Other surgical procedures may be needed to improve those areas.
How do I know if require a Face Lift?
If you have any of the following, you require a Face Lift surgery:
- Loose skin, wrinkles, or excess fatty tissue in the neck
- Deep line that runs from the corner of the nose to the corner of the mouth
- Deep wrinkles in the cheeks, and sagging skin near the cheekbones
- Do not have a well defined jaw line
How is Face Lift done?
Face Lift is usually performed under local anesthesia with oral sedation to help you relax during the procedure. It can also be performed under general anesthesia. The procedure of Face Lift may take anywhere from 3 - 5 hours
An incision is made along the hairline just above the ear which extends down along the front edge of the ear, around the earlobe, and then up and behind the ear extending back into the hairline. The intent for making this incision is to hide it in the hair and make it as inconspicuous as possible. The same kind of incision is repeated on the other side of the face. Using various kinds of highly sophisticated instruments that are used for the Face Lift procedure, the surgeon separates the skin of the face from its underlying tissue, moving down to the cheek and into the neck area and below the chin. Fat deposits over the cheeks and in the neck may either be removed surgically or with Liposuction at this time.
The surgeon will then tighten bands of small facial muscles and tissue that extend up from the shoulder, below the chin, and up and behind the neck to give the face and neck the 'lift'. The excess skin from the edges of the original incision is trimmed, pulls the skin back and re-drapes it on the face, staples or sutures it into place.
What is the aftercare and how long is the recovery period after the Face Lift?
The face is bandaged to avoid hematoma formation. You will spend the next few hours after Face Lift in the recovery room to ensure that there is no bleeding and will be allowed to go home the same or the following day after the Face Lift procedure.
Be gentle with your face and hair in the next few weeks as your face will be tender after the Face Lift. The stitches are removed after a week of your Face Lift and you will be able to enjoy your new and improved look soon enough.
Stitches in front of the ear are removed within the first week, and the rest of the sutures will be removed within two weeks. Makeup may be worn to conceal bruising. By ten to fourteen days non-strenuous work and light exercise may be resumed. After four to six weeks, more strenuous exercise may be resumed.
What precautions are to be taken following Face Lift surgery?
- Avoid irritation of your facial skin
- Sleep with your head slightly elevated to minimize swelling
- Avoid strenuous activities
- Avoid saunas and steam baths for the next few days.
How long does a face lift last?
Face lift surgery does not prevent the aging process. It simply resets the clock for an earlier time. However, there are some factors that change the longevity of the lift.
Condition of the skin is a major contributing factor. Skin that has lost elasticity through age, sun damage, smoking, and weight fluctuation will tend to recoil back to the pre-operative state sooner than more elastic skin. Younger, more elastic skin will maintain the longevity of the face lift. Some patients with severe skin elasticity problems may require an earlier secondary lift to obtain a desired result.
What are the risks associated with Face Lift surgery?
There are very rare chances of any complication and the risks associated with face lift surgery and are same as that with any surgical procedure which includes bleeding, infection, scarring, damage to deeper structures, asymmetry, nerve injury, improper healing, numbness, allergic reactions, and risks and complications associated with anesthesia. Although complications can occur, they are rare.
Smokers have a greater risk of skin loss, pulmonary, and wound healing complications.
