A High flexion knee or full bend knee replacement allows bending to 155 degrees and is a boon to patients seeking increased function after knee replacement.

The hi flex knees allow activities which are not possible after conventional knee replacement. This includes kneeling, squatting, gardening etc.

The high degree of flexion is not achievable in all patients though, only a few are eligible. The results are also dependant on surgery technique, design of the prosthesis and physiotherapy.

Candidates

Hi- flex knee replacement is an option for those osteoarthritis patients who want to continue their active lifestyle after total knee replacement . The patient should not be obese, the pre operative knee bend should be above 90 degrees, should not have ankylosed or fused knees, ideally should have osteoarthritis, but bone destruction should not be much even if it is rheumatoid arthritis. Revision knee replacement patients are not the candidates for hi-flex knee replacement .

Expected Results

The results of hi-flex knee replacement surgery are quite gratifying. The patient is able to squat/ sit on the floor, kneel, climb stairs and even do gardening which is not possible with conventional knee replacements.

Recovery

You would stay at the hospital for a week and shall experience some pain and discomfort which shall be controlled with medications. Physical therapy shall be started for early recovery and strengthening of the muscles.

You would need to stay at the hospital for a week after the surgery and another week to ten days in town before you can go back. If you are travelling to India for knee replacement, a time of two weeks for single knee replacement and three weeks for bilateral knee replacement is enough for you to recover and go back.
