Medical Visa to India


The Indian Government has started issuing a Medical Visa for tourists who come to India for medical treatment. This visa is valid for a year or the period of treatment, whichever is less, and can be extended by another year. The medical visa enables a tourist to travel to India up to three times in one year. Two family members or attendants can also accompany a patient on a medical visa. Based on the Indian Embassy's assessment of the patients needs, family members or attendants can be granted a visa, in association with the patient's medical visa.

The Medical Visa may be issued in following conditions:

  • The Indian post will scrutinize the medical documents and satisfy themselves the bonafide purpose for which medical visa medical visa is being requested.
  • Mission may satisfy that applicant has sought preliminary medical advice from the country of origin and has been advised to go for specialized treatment.

Validity and Extension of Visa

The initial visa is valid up to a period of one year and or the period of treatment whichever is lesser, which can be extended further by the state government on the production of medical certificate/ advice from a reputed/ recognized healthcare institute in the country. Any further extension will be granted by the Ministry of Home Affairs only on recommendation of State government supported by appropriate medical documents. Such visa valid for maximum three entries in a year.

State Government may permit one entry in emergent situation if required.

Registration Foreigners coming on Medical visa will be required to get themselves registered mandatorily within the period of 14 days of arrival with the concerned FRROs/ FROs.

Visa to attendant/ Family members

Attendant/ family members of the patient coming to India for medical treatment shall be granted miscellaneous visa with the Medical Visa of the patient. Such visa may be granted to spouse/ children or those who have blood relations with the patient.

However, not more than two attendants will be allowed at the time of grant miscellaneous visa. Such Visa will be called "MX visa". Such foreigners are also required to get themselves registered with the local FROs/ FRROs within 14 days from the date of arrival.

General requirements:
  • Original passport valid for at least six months
  • Correct visa fee.
  • Two passport-size photographs (five photographs in case of Pakistani nationals)
  • Supporting documents, where necessary
  • Duly completed application form (Pakistani and Bangladeshi nationals need to apply on special application forms)
