What is Alcohol Septal Ablation?
Alcohol septal ablation is a non-surgical treatment used for the treatment of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. This is a hereditary disorder characterized by unusually thick heart muscle. This procedure alleviates your heart symptoms while also lowering the risk of future issues.
The goal of alcohol septal ablation is to destroy extra heart muscle and cause a minor ‘heart attack’ to clear the way for blood flow. Pure alcohol is injected into a tiny heart artery that supplies the target area of heart muscle to achieve this.
The area affected by alcohol is minimal, and it has little effect on your heart’s pumping function. The injured heart muscle will shrink over time, reducing the blockage to blood flow. The majority of patients (70-80 percent) report improved symptoms and increased exercise capacity as a result of this treatment.
When is Alcohol Septal Ablation required?
Patients with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy who are not responding to medical treatment are candidates for alcohol septal ablation.
In older adults and those with mild septal thickness, alcohol septal ablation is frequently recommended. Certain medical issues can make open-heart surgery more dangerous to perform. . Alcohol septal ablation is a better alternative for you in such a situation.
How is Alcohol Septal Ablation done?
Step 1
A local anesthetic will be applied to your groin and wrist; you will be awake, but sedation will be given. To access the heart, a plastic tube (catheter), which has a balloon at the tip, will be put in the blood vessel.
Step 2
Your doctor threads the tube through a blood vessel in your groin all the way to the artery that carries blood to your septum. Your doctor then injects alcohol, through the catheter into the area where the heart is too thick.
Step 3
The alcohol is poisonous, and it shrinks and kills part of your heart muscle cells. Scar tissue that remains is thinner than the heart muscle. Blood flow from your heart and out to your body improves as a result of this. The balloon is then deflated, and the tube is guided back out of your body by the doctor.
What is the Recovery after Alcohol Septal Ablation like?
After an alcohol septal ablation, patients are admitted to the hospital for three to four days. Your cardiac team will closely evaluate your vital signs, the incision site, and your overall health during this time before releasing you.
It’s essential to gradually resume your normal activities after you’ve been discharged.
What Results Can I Expect from Alcohol Septal Ablation?
When used in carefully screened patients, alcohol septal ablation is more than 90 percent effective in relieving symptoms of obstructive hypertrophic cardiomyopathy.
