What is Cardiac Ablation?
Cardiac ablation creates small scars in your heart using heat or cold energy to block abnormal electrical signals and restore a steady heartbeat. The treatment is used to treat irregular heartbeats (arrhythmias).
Cardiac ablation is most commonly performed with catheters, which are thin, flexible tubes placed into veins or arteries. Ablation is rarely done as a heart surgery procedure.
- There are two methods for performing cardiac ablation:
- Radiofrequency ablation uses heat energy to eliminate the problem area.
- Cryoablation uses very cold temperatures.
Types of Cardiac Surgical Ablation:
- Maze procedure: The maze treatment is frequently done while you’re having open heart surgery for another issue, such as a bypass or valve replacement. The doctor makes minor cuts in the upper section of your heart to generate scar tissue that blocks abnormal signals.
- Mini maze: The majority of persons with AFib do not require open-heart surgery. This is where the less invasive kind comes into play. Catheter ablation is performed by making numerous tiny slits between your ribs and using a camera. Some hospitals provide robotic-assisted surgery, which involves fewer cuts and is more accurate. A video camera or a small robot will be implanted in your chest by your doctor. It’ll direct the formation of scar tissue, which may aid in keeping your heart rate in check.
- Convergent procedure: This pairs catheter ablation with a mini maze. The doctor uses radiofrequency ablation in the pulmonary vein, and a surgeon makes a small cut under your breastbone to use radiofrequency energy on the outside of your heart.
When is Cardiac Ablation required?
Electrical signals that cause your heart to squeeze (contract) must follow a certain course through your heart when it beats. An irregular heartbeat can be caused by any interruption in the signaling pathway (arrhythmia).
Cardiac ablation may be one of your first treatments, depending on the type of heart rhythm problem you have. It’s also used when other medications or treatments have failed.
If you have any of the following symptoms, your doctor may suggest cardiac ablation:
- Tried and failed to treat an arrhythmia with medications
- Have had major negative effects from arrhythmia medications.
- Certain forms of arrhythmias, such as Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome and supraventricular tachycardia, respond well to ablation.
- Have a high risk of arrhythmia-related consequences, such as sudden cardiac arrest
How is Cardiac Ablation done?
The procedure can be done under local anesthesia with or without sedation, or even general anesthesia depending on your health and anesthetist’s recommendation, and takes anywhere from 3 to 6 hours.
Step 1
Catheter Ablation :
A vein in your groin, neck, or forearm will be numbed by your doctor. A needle will be inserted into the vein, and a small tube called a sheath will be passed through the needle. Catheters are inserted into your veins and into your heart through this sheath. Electrodes or dye might be used by your doctor to locate the source of your arrhythmia and destroy abnormal tissue.
Step 2
Surgical Ablation :
Surgical ablation is more complex. Your doctor will cut down the centre of your chest and separate your breastbone during a maze surgery. To keep your blood flowing, they’ll attach you up to a heart-lung bypass machine. For the ablation instruments, they’ll make one or more small cuts on your chest.
What is the Recovery after Cardiac Ablation like?
The recovery depends on the type of procedure chosen.
Full recovery takes about 6 to 8 weeks, but you should be able to return to normal activities within 2 or 3 weeks. You should start to feel better in about 4 weeks.
What Results Can I Expect from Cardiac Ablation?
Cardiac ablation offers great outcomes and results that are quite rewarding. The majority of people who get the surgery return to their normal activities thereafter. If your AFib symptoms are severe and making it difficult to perform daily duties, cardiac ablation may be the right option for you.

Frequently Asked Questions
This is a major operation. You’ll be in intensive care for a day or two, and you could be in the hospital for up to a week. You’ll feel exhausted and experience chest ache at first. You should be able to return to work in approximately a couple of weeks , but it could take up to 3-4 months to be back to normal.
Depending on your health and various other factors, general anesthesia or local anesthesia with sedation may be utilized.
Ablation has a success rate of 70 to 80 percent on average. The success rate for those who are young, have intermittent afib, and have no underlying cardiac disease can be as high as 95%.
AFib and other arrhythmias can be safely and successfully treated using catheter ablation. It is indeed a safe procedure, if done by a qualified Cardiologist in a well equipped facility, though like any other procedure carries some risks. The risks include bleeding, infection, and/or pain where the catheter was inserted, while these complications are rare.
Cardiac ablation takes two to four hours to complete and is performed in an electrophysiology lab where you will be watched and given intravenous drugs to help you fall asleep before the treatment.
Cardiac ablation can be done on people as old as 90 years old and have the same results as young patients. Patient selection becomes increasingly important as people get older, because there is always a danger in older people.
It takes about six to eight weeks to fully recover, and you may experience arrhythmias in the first few weeks after the procedure, necessitating the use of prescription medicines or other treatments.
You are not permitted to drive for one to two weeks following the treatment. You should wait two weeks until you feel physically capable of performing more procedures.
The diseased tissues of the heart are obliterated during cardiac ablation by burning or freezing them. Cardiac ablation can minimize or even eliminate your symptoms and help you feel better, but it is an invasive operation that is not for everyone.
