Overview

Dr. Vikas Gupte offers a wealth of experience and skill in Minimally Invasive and Endoscopic Spine Surgeries.

Dr. Gupte is skilled in Minimally Invasive Surgery and has completed an International Clinical Fellowship in Minimally Invasive and Endoscopic spine surgery at Wooridul Spine Hospital in Seoul, South Korea. He also completed Fellowship training at the Fukuoka Spine Injury Center in Japan. It is a world-class dedicated hospital for spinal problems, as well as a recognised teaching institution for the American Board for Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery.

He is the only surgeon in India who offers many surgical treatment options for Disc Disorder (PELD, MED, and Microdiscectomy). He’s the only surgeon in Western India who can perform endoscopic cervical disc decompression.

He’s also a member of the Asian Academy of Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery, which he founded.

Dr. Gupte was part of a team of specialists at Fortis Hospital Mulund that performed a minimally invasive computer guided navigation spine surgery that allowed a 60-year-old patient with a degenerative spine to get back on her feet in less than a month. For the first time, this technology has been effectively applied in India. The patient had already undergone two procedures, each of which aggravated the situation. She was able to get up and walk after the surgery.

He received the E-Merck Traveling Fellowship for 1988 from the Bombay Orthopedic Society, which is part of the prominent Merck Foundation, which works to provide health services to underserved regions.

    More About Spine Surgeons

Many years back, it was only neurosurgeons who used to perform spine surgery; however, in the last 20 to 25 years, spine surgery has evolved to the point where both neurosurgeons and orthopedic surgeons specialize in it, and both types of surgeons are equally qualified for most common spine operations.

The most significant distinction between fellowship-trained and board-certified orthopedic spine surgeons and neurosurgeons is in training. A neurosurgeon is educated to treat brain and spine disorders, whereas an orthopedic spine surgeon focuses on the spine.

One of the most common inquiries people have when considering spine surgery is, “Which is better, a neurosurgeon or an orthopedic spine surgeon?” The short answer is that both particularly trained orthopedic surgeons and neurosurgeons may be considered for most types of spine surgery.

While each specialty’s training focuses on a distinct aspect of spine surgery, both are equally equipped to perform the bulk of spine surgeries (there are some exceptions to this rule: for example, a neurosurgeon is generally better suited for tumor surgery and an orthopedic surgeon for deformity). On a case and even in the operating room, neurosurgeons and orthopedic surgeons routinely collaborate.

Many countries like the US, UK, Germany have advanced infrastructure and trained doctors for spine surgery. The drawback is the cost of surgery in these countries is very high. India has emerged as one of the most favorite destinations for people looking for equally good spinal surgeries at affordable prices.

Hospitals in India are as good as the hospitals in the Western countries with the latest technology and infrastructure available. The best spine surgeons in India are trained at few of the best medical schools in India and the west; and they are adept in performing the most complex cases with great dexterity. The success stories of these surgeons say it all.
