What is Nuclear Stress (Thallium) Test?
A nuclear stress test, also known as thallium stress test, is a nuclear imaging procedure that determines how well blood flows into your heart when you’re exercising or resting.
A radioisotope, a liquid with a small amount of radioactivity, is injected into one of your veins during the process. The radioisotope will go through your bloodstream to your heart. Once the radiation has entered your heart, a gamma camera can detect the radiation and indicate any problems with your heart muscle.
The thallium stress test can reveal the size of your heart chambers, how well your heart pumps (ventricular function), and how well your coronary arteries supply your heart with blood (myocardial perfusion), as well as whether your heart muscle is injured or scarred from past heart attacks.
When is Nuclear Stress (Thallium) Test required?
Your doctor may order a thallium test for a variety of reasons, including :
- if they suspect your heart isn’t getting enough blood flow when it’s under stress — for example, when you exercise
- if you have chest pain or worsening angina
- if you’ve had a previous heart attack
- to check how well medications are working
- to determine whether a procedure or surgery was successful
- to determine whether your heart is healthy enough to start an exercise program
How is Nuclear Stress (Thallium) Test done?
The procedure can be done under local anesthesia with or without sedation, or even general anesthesia depending on your health and anesthetist’s recommendation, and takes anywhere from 3 to 6 hours.
Steps
An intravenous (IV) line is inserted by a nurse or healthcare practitioner, generally on the inside of your elbow. Through the IV, a radioisotope or radiopharmaceutical drug such as thallium or sestamibi is injected.
The gamma camera detects the radioactive substance, which identifies your blood flow. Your heart is photographed throughout both the workout and rest portions of the test.
What Results Can I Expect from Nuclear Stress (Thallium) Test?
The reason for the test, your age, your history of cardiac problems, and other medical factors all influence the outcome.
A normal result indicates that blood flow via your heart’s coronary arteries is normal.
Abnormal results indicate reduced blood flow to a region of your heart caused by constriction or blockage of one or more arteries supplying your heart muscle or scarring of your heart muscle from a previous heart attack, heart illness, or a heart that is excessively big, signalling other heart problems.

There is absolutely no catch. The cost of cardiac surgery in India and for that matter, medical treatment in India is much less because of the following
reasons:
Low cost of endowment in India : Qualified doctors, surgeons, nursing staff, lower investments costs, subsidies by government to private healthcare sector are more as compared to other countries
An exchange rate regime, which is favorable to India (indicative rates only, may not be currently applicable)
1 USD= 75 Indian rupees

1 Euro= 85 Indian rupees
Yes, almost all heart surgery patients undergo angiography before cardiac surgery. Other tests are also performed before any anesthesia is given.
This includes:
- Blood tests to evaluate chemistries, blood count and blood type.
- Chest X-ray to evaluate lungs and heart size.
- Carotid Doppler to evaluate blood vessels in the neck leading to the brain.
- Other tests that your doctor feels you must undergo before the surgery
The surgeon makes all efforts to avoid blood transfusion. If you may need blood, the blood banks are there at the hospital to supply blood. The blood banks at the hospitals in India are FDA approved and adhere to international standards of blood screening for all infectious diseases such as AIDS, Hepatitis etc.
We advise you to bring an attendant with you if you are coming for a serious treatment like heart surgery.
In case you are traveling alone for the treatment, we advise you to extend your stay at the hospital till you can be on your own. We shall assist you with a nurse that can take care of you while you are at the hotel, but the best option would be to bring an attendant for physical and emotional support while you recover.
You need to be very careful in using your upper body to allow for your sternum bone to heal well. You should not push, pull or lift anything heavy for at least two months after the surgery. Your surgeon and the medical staff shall give you specific instructions about do’s and don’ts after the surgery. The physical therapist will tell you how to strengthen the muscles.
The duration of stay depends on the type of heart treatment or surgery you undergo. Typically, you would need around 2-3 weeks in India before you can fly back to your country.
Experience and turn around was great. I wouldn’t mind doing business with them again.
