What is Tip Plasty ?

Tip rhinoplasty is the surgery of the tip of the nose either to enhance the appearance of the nose or to improve the nasal function by repairing the defect in the tip of the nose. During the procedure, the nasal bridge and the bony structures are not operated or touched, tip plasty is performed by either augmenting or reducing the appearance of the nasal alars and cartilage.

Some people may have a big bulbous nose, which means a fat nose with a fat tip or without any definition on the tip. The nasal tip plasty corrects any such defects by creating an elevation on the tip of the nose or by adjusting the already existing tip elevation so that it looks raised enough while having a proper angle between the nose and the lips. Sometimes, nasal tip plasty is also performed on an already narrow nose to give it a lift on the tip, thus, raising the high points.

Because this is a less invasive procedure, serious side effects are very rare. Infection and numbness can occur but are very unusual. Most patients have a satisfying result.

  • Long nasal tip that may need shortening
  • Short nasal tip that may need lengthening

How is Tip Plasty done?

Step 1

Proper size and position of the implant is determined preoperatively.

Step 2

An incision is placed on the inner portion of the knee in the natural crease. It passes through the underlying connective tissue and muscles. Then with the help of a blunt dissector an internal pocket is created to make space for the implant to be placed. The implant is then inserted.

Step 3

Sutures are placed and dressed in compression bandages for proper healing and positioning.

What is the Recovery after Tip Plasty like?

During recovery, you will feel mild bruising, pain and discomfort which can be easily treated using pain medications. You would also be wearing a nasal splint for a week to ten days to protect the nasal bony and cartilaginous structures. It is strongly advised to refrain from picking your nose or blowing your nose during the recovery period and so is smoking. Your surgeon would strongly advise you not to smoke until your nose has healed well.

Light activity like returning to work or school can be resumed in ten days to 2 weeks. It takes about 6 – 8 weeks to resume rigorous activities.

What Results Can I Expect from Tip Plasty?

You can expect great results if you have realistic expectations from tip rhinoplasty. Final results of rhinoplasty may not be apparent until 6 months to a year after the surgery.
