What is Gastric Banding Surgery ?
Laparoscopic adjustable gastric band, popularly known as “Lap band” or “Gastric band” is a minimally invasive, swift, reversible and adjustable weight loss surgery procedure. The procedure entails placing an inflatable silicone device or band around the top portion of the stomach, which reduces the capacity of the stomach, resulting in lesser food intake and thus facilitating weight loss.
It is a restrictive type of weight loss surgery procedure that limits the amount of food the stomach can hold. The best part of the procedure is that it is reversible and adjustable. Since a small pouch in the upper part of the stomach is created with a stoma that is adjustable and controllable, the doctor is able to regulate the rate of weight loss according to the patients’ requirements.
Another major benefit of this surgery is that it is a minimally invasive procedure of its kind. The process usually requires a shorter stay at the hospital; has a quicker recovery process, results in fewer scars and marks, and lesser pain as compared to other bariatric surgery procedures.
Advantages of Gastric Band surgery
Gastric band has certain advantages such as:
- Simpler procedure
- Lesser complications
- Band is adjustable to desired tightness
- Initial recovery is quite quick, as less as 48 hours
- 40 to 50% weight loss within a year
However, the major disadvantage of a lap band is that it requires frequent adjustment and thus regular visits to the doctor. As you lose weight, the band becomes loose and thus requires a visit to the doctor for tightening. Many people also report the slipping of the band from its place. The long-term results of the lap band have also not been as good as other bariatric surgery procedures.
Most people prefer gastric sleeve over gastric band because of various advantages gastric sleeve offers over lap-band surgery.
Am I a Good Candidate?
You may be a candidate for lap-band surgery if your Body Mass Index is more than 40 or more than 35 with obesity-related health conditions; you weigh twice the ideal weight or are 100 pounds overweight; between 18 and 60 years and are committed to making changes in your diet and lifestyle.
How is Gastric Banding Surgery done?
Gastric band surgery is done laparoscopically usually under general anesthesia. 1 to 5 small incisions are made in the abdomen for laparoscopy and instrument insertion.
An adjustable silicone band is squeezed around the stomach to give an opening of an inch. A tube runs from a silicone band just below the skin. It allows injection of saline in and out of the band for adjusting the band over a period of time.
What is the Recovery after Gastric Banding Surgery like?
Recovery after a gastric band is quick, though you may feel a little uncomfortable for a couple of days after the procedure. Most people are able to resume their routine activities in about a week to 10 days. You need to be cautious of the food and diet you take to avoid cramps and nausea. A strict regimen about the diet should be followed as per the surgeon’s and dietician’s recommendation for quick recovery. Typically, it’ll be about ten days before you can go back to work, and about a month to six weeks before you can start exercising again.
What Results Can I Expect from Gastric Banding Surgery?
You can expect to lose about 1-1/2 to 2 pounds per week and about 40-50% of the excess weight within the first year of surgery. The individual results may be more or less than the average because weight loss is dependent on a combination of factors including the starting weight, the diet after surgery, and the amount of exercise the patient does.

Thank you so much Indicure and Dr. Ruchika, for the support and care received while on our journey of weight loss through bariatric surgery. We feel so blessed to have met a caring team. My Fondest memories always of India will always hold a special part of my heart.
My son had a Gastric Banding in Delhi last September 2017. A year later my son is a different young man. Our reason for traveling from Australia was his age is 14. You saved my son’s life and I will be forever grateful for that, the care and service were immaculate. yes, it can be a culture shock, in another country. But it, not any less of what we would have received here.
Dr. Ruchika in India delivered efficient and professional service from the outset, matching up my weight and health concerns with the most amazing surgeon at the Apollo Spectra hospital in New Delhi, who made good all the promises that had been made, and MORE. All arrangements were executed seamlessly. Very glad I found them and will certainly be using them again, should the need arise.
One thing that stood out for me, as long as the hospital and the service in the US were compared to the hospital here, it’s better here. And working with IndiCure was that the service was amazing!”
Frequently Asked Questions
You can expect to lose around 40-50% of your excess weight after Gastric band surgery. The outcome of the surgery also depends on how much you adhere to the recommended diet and how frequently you visit your doctor for the band adjustment.
You may be a candidate for lap-band surgery if your Body Mass Index is more than 40 or more than 35 with obesity-related health conditions like Diabetes, Hypertension, etc.
You may experience minor side effects like nausea and vomiting, Gastro-esophageal reflux (indigestion, acidity), etc. after the procedure.
The major side effects may include ulceration at the band site.
It is advisable that you avoid alcohol for at least the first two months after the procedure. Alcohol is heavy in calories and contains no nutrients, so you must be careful of the quantity you intake. It can also increase appetite, which is still another reason to avoid excessive drinking.
Diet plays a very important role after any weight loss surgery and so is the case with Gastric band. Your surgeon and dietitian will advise the diet that you need to follow post surgery.
Though you are allowed to take almost all kinds of food items, you may not be able to tolerate certain foods like pasta, rice, bread, raw vegetables, and meats, and may need to be careful while taking them. The basic premises to be followed are portion control, eating slowly and thoroughly chewing the food, taking frequent, smaller meals, avoiding water or any other drinks 30 minutes before and after the meals.
A gastric band, unlike a gastric bypass or a sleeve gastrectomy, does not require any permanent changes to your body, in terms of removing a portion of your stomach or rerouting and stapling your body. It’s entirely reversible and can be taken off at any time.
