Root Canal Treatment in India
Root Canal treatment in India, commonly known as RCT is an endodontic treatment in which the diseased or damaged pulp tissue at the centre of the tooth is removed and the space is filled and sealed, to remove infected tissue and prevent future infections. This procedure treats the infection of the blood or nerve supply of a tooth (called pulp) caused due to tooth decay or injury.
Root Canal treatment in India is an advanced version of RCT which is done through lasers, and helps the procedure to be completed in just one painless sitting, ensuring complete sterilization of infected root canals.
Disease causes leading to Root Canal Treatment
Tooth consists of a pulp chamber at its centre which has a nerve ending. Trauma or infection to this nerve leads to RCT. Causes for RCT include:
- Tooth decay
- Trauma to the tooth or previous trauma that was left untreated
- Tooth abscess and infection
- Aged tooth
Signs and symptoms indicating an RCT
- Severe tooth pain on chewing
- Sustained sensitivity or pain to heat or cold after the stimuli is removed
- Discoloured teeth
- Swollen tender gums adjacent to it
Tooth extraction is the only other alternative to RCT and can be followed by bridge or implant to fill the gap of the missing tooth.Diagnosis
Periapical x-rays are used for confirmation of diagnosis
Painless one sitting laser assisted root canal treatment ensures total sterilization of infected root canals with minimal to no discomfort, speed, accuracy and less pain. One can expect the best results with maximal comfort and convenience.
Cases where tooth can be retained even though caries were involved with the dental pulp, gross tooth destruction with pulp involvement and good bone support to the pulp involving tooth is the criteria for RCT.Procedure
The dentists will decide about the number of sittings. With latest technology and advancement in techniques, root canal in one sitting is done in India. The dentist starts with treating any infections or abscesses with antibiotics. The next step is to anesthetise the tooth for starting the procedure. The next steps in treatment are as follows:
- An x ray of entire tooth called periapical x-ray is taken. Then a rubber damn is placed for isolation of the area
- An opening is made directly above the pulp chamber to give access to it.
- Tiny instruments called files are used to remove diseased tissue and nerve manually or by slow speed rotary instruments
- An x-ray is taken again to determine the root length
- After making sure that the entire nerve is removed so that there is no re-infection or pain, the apex of the root is closed.
- The root canals are then cleaned and dried completely with absorbent paper points.
- Guttapercha points are used to fill and seal the tooth roots
- Any remnant caries are removed and a temporary filling or permanent filling is done.
- A crown is later placed on this RCT tooth since it becomes brittle with time due to lack of blood and nerve supply
There is a possibility of mild pain or discomfort which can be relieved by pain killers. Antibiotics are given to prevent uneventful healing without infections.
Properly done RCT will last a lifetime with a proper crown accompanying it.
Dental crown is a cap like structure covering the entire tooth or implant. Dental crowns are used in cases of broken tooth to restore its nature shape and form.Causes for Dental Crown:
There are specific reasons and conditions for crown requirement such as after RCT, since the tooth is without nerve, and blood supply is brittle
Gross dental caries covering 2/3 of the crown portion of natural teeth are required.
Types of Crowns:
All-ceramic:They are most aesthetic in appearance with no metal and good strength like bonded crown.
Porcelain crowns: They are made of porcelain completely but not strong as bonded crowns.
Glass: These look natural and can be used in all teeth.
Gold alloy: It is an alloy of gold.
Dental crowns can be made of gold, porcelain, Zirconia and many other materials.
Dental Crown procedure involves 2 sittings. The first sitting involves reducing the tooth to accommodate the crown. Then measurements are taken with impressions. Temporary crown is made and placed on tooth. The impressions are sent to the laboratory for crown fabrication.
The second sitting involves fitting the new crown after removing the temporary crown. The permanent crown is cemented to the prepared tooth and adjustments are made accordingly.
Results and Prognosis
A well prepared and handled crown lasts anything between 10 to 15 years, some even more. Normal care like cleaning and flossing are necessary.
