What is Gastric Balloon ?

The Intra Gastric Balloon, (IGB) also known as the gastric balloon is a simple, non-invasive procedure to treat excessive weight. It involves placing a balloon inside the stomach to reduce hunger and food intake, thereby resulting in weight loss.

Gastric Balloon is a very simple procedure wherein a soft, expandable balloon made of pliable silicone material is inserted in its smallest, deflated form. The balloon is filled with sterile saline with a small catheter once it reaches the stomach. This balloon is temporary and generally removed after 6 to 8 months after the procedure, however can be removed at any time if the candidate feels uncomfortable or has trouble in the normal body functions.

Sometimes it is used when the patient’s BMI is not high enough to justify surgery. It offers a weight loss solution to help patients to kick-start their lifestyle changes.

Advantages of Gastric Balloon

Gastric balloon has certain advantages over other more complex procedures such as

  • The balloon is adjustable and has good life
  • It is a simple small procedure and not a major surgery
  • Cost is lower than other major procedures
  • Weight loss is interrelated with proper diet and exercise but effective
  • Relatively less or no complications when compared to major procedures
  • Procedure takes much lesser time with the recovery time of only a day or two

Frequently Asked Questions

You can expect to lose 30-40% or more of your excess body weight after a gastric balloon procedure. The amount of weight loss greatly depends on the lifestyle you follow- your adherence to recommended diet, the kind of diet you take, and how active a lifestyle you have.

Gastric balloon procedure, also known as Endoscopic Intra-gastric balloon is a non invasive procedure and thus not a surgery. It involves insertion of a specialized sterile balloon through an endoscopy without involving any incisions.

The procedure is not painful, though you may have some discomfort, uneasiness, or nausea for a couple of days which can be controlled with drugs.

Gastric Balloon procedure is completely safe if performed by an experienced and well-trained bariatric surgeon in a well-equipped surgical facility.

The possible risks of Gastric Balloon are:

  • Insignificant weight loss
  • Weight Regain after balloon removal
  • Discomfort/ inability to tolerate the balloon
  • Nausea and feeling of sickness
  • Infection while the balloon is in place
  • Indigestion
  • Acid Reflux

With the advancement in technology and the use of the best quality balloons, though highly unlikely, there is a possibility of balloon rupture. Thus as a precaution, a safe and non-toxic blue methylene dye is added to the balloon when it is filled at the time of placement. In case your urine turns green anytime your balloon is in place, it would indicate a rupture and the balloon would be removed immediately.

Gastric Ballooning is absolutely worth it if you are ready to change and maintain your lifestyle. The procedure greatly helps you in this lifestyle change as you feel full after having much smaller portions, your appetite is reduced and you remain full for longer periods. You are also advised to exercise regularly along with dietary changes.

If you incorporate and stick to this lifestyle even after balloon removal, you can expect to maintain your weight and remain slimmer and healthier for good!
