Surgery may also be considered at a BMI of 30 to 34.9 for people with metabolic disease, such as type 2 diabetes, that is not well controlled by other treatments.

Non-surgical options such as gastric balloons may suit some patients, but they generally produce less weight loss. Your surgeon will recommend a procedure based on your BMI, health conditions and goals.
Many patients lose around 60-77% of their excess body weight within 12 to 18 months, with the fastest loss in the first six months. Results depend on the procedure, your starting weight and health, and how closely you follow dietary, exercise, and follow-up advice. Some weight regain over the long term is possible.

Bariatric surgery costs in India usually cover pre-operative tests, surgeon and anaesthesia fees, a standard hospital stay, surgical consumables and dietary counselling after discharge.
The final cost depends on whether the surgery is laparoscopic or robotic, the hospital and room category, your health (some patients need ICU monitoring or extra specialist input) and any complications.
ASMBS estimates that bariatric surgery in the United States typically costs between about US $ 15,000 and US $ 25,000.
It can for many patients. International diabetes organisations, through the 2016 Diabetes Surgery Summit guidelines, recognise metabolic surgery as a treatment option for type 2 diabetes in people with obesity. Changes in gut hormones such as GLP-1 can improve blood sugar within days, even before much weight is lost. In the long term, you'll need to prioritise protein, eat small portions and take lifelong vitamin and mineral supplements, usually including a multivitamin, calcium, vitamin D and vitamin B12, to prevent deficiencies.
