Spinal Fusion Surgery

Spinal fusion surgery is a medical procedure wherein two or more spinal vertebrae are permanently joined together to eliminate motion between them. This technique stabilizes the vertebral segments and relieves any pain they may have been causing.

The goal of spine fusion surgery is to treat discomfort that is thought to be caused by a moving segment of the spine. The spine's bones grow together or fuse during lumbar fusion, preventing motion between the two vertebrae. Intervertebral disc and bone spur removal relieves pressure on the spinal nerves, which lessens pain.

Injuries or the ageing process may be the cause of the pain. Back, leg, or arm discomfort might result from the irregular movement between the vertebrae caused by an unstable spine. The spine is straightened and stabilized via spinal fusion, which also lessens discomfort and protects the spinal cord and nerves by maintaining the proper disc gap between the vertebrae.

Spinal fusion may relieve symptoms of many back conditions, including:

  • Although vertebral fractures can be corrected without spinal fusion surgery, it is occasionally necessary to do the procedure if the fracture makes the spinal vertebrae unstable.
  • Spinal abnormalities such as scoliosis and kyphosis
  • Herniated discs and degenerative disc disease
  • The vertebra sliding onto the vertebra below is known as spondylolisthesis. It results in limb numbness and excruciating back and leg pain.
  • Additional factors include tumors, infections, spinal stenosis, and more.

When is Spinal Fusion Surgery Needed?

When previous non-surgical treatments, such as medication, physiotherapy, and injections, have failed to ease the patient's back, leg, and arm pain due to excessive aberrant motion at a vertebral segment, spinal fusion surgery is performed.

In cases of Spondylolisthesis and degenerative disc degeneration, spinal fusion surgery is also performed (isthmic, degenerative or post-laminectomy spondylolisthesis).

A weak or unstable spine caused by an infection, a spinal tumor, fractures, scoliosis, or any other deformity should also be treated with spinal fusion surgery.

A healthy individual who can endure the procedure well and is otherwise in good physical shape makes a good candidate for inexpensive spinal fusion surgery in India.

A good candidate for spinal fusion surgery is one who is otherwise in good physical condition, and can tolerate the procedure well.

Different Types of Spinal Fusions

Different types of spinal fusion surgeries are commonly available, like:

Lumbar Spine Fusion Surgery

The goal of lumbar fusion surgery is to relieve the patient's leg and hip pain that originates in the low back. There are numerous ways to perform lumbar fusion surgery, but each method uses a bone graft to fuse the two vertebrae and so stop motion at that region.

Various types of spinal fusion surgeries in India that IndiCure can assist you with include:

  • Posterolateral gutter fusion involves accessing the spine through the back
  • Posterior lumbar interbody fusion (PLIF/TLIF) involves accessing the spine through the back while the patient lies on his stomach. The procedure entails removing the disc between two vertebrae and inserting the bone graft in the space.
  • Anterior lumbar interbody fusion (ALIF) is the same as TLIF or PLIF except that the spine is accessed from the front. The technique remains the same.
  • Anterior/posterior spinal fusion involves accessing spine from back and front both
  • Minimally invasive techniques involve fusions to be done with smaller incisions.

Bone Grafting

Bone grafts are necessary for all spinal fusion procedures to aid with fusion. Bone grafts promote bone healing, aid in the fusion of the vertebrae into a single, solid bone, and, in the case of larger bone grafts, even serve as a structural support. Autografts are grafts taken from a person's own body. A bone bank is often used to obtain cadaver bone grafts, another type of graft.

Immobilization with braces, plates, rods and screws are used to stabilize the bone and for internal fixation which speeds up the healing process.

Multiple level Spinal Fusion Surgery

Because the patient does not experience any motion restriction following fusion at one level, lumbar spinal fusion surgery is most successful in problems affecting just one vertebral segment. Fusing two levels is a viable strategy to relieve pain if necessary. The remaining spinal joints may become too stressed from spinal fusion at more than two levels, which could result in pain at further levels. Only in extremely rare circumstances, like scoliosis and lumbar deformity, is three or more level fusion suggested.

Cervical Spine fusion surgery

In order to stabilize the neck after an accident and avoid vertebral fractures that could harm the spinal cord and result in paralysis, the cervical spinal bones are fused. Additionally, spinal stenosis, ruptured discs, infections, tumors, and other spinal abnormalities are treated by cervical spine fusion surgery.

Question to Ask

How is Spinal Fusion Surgery done?

You are put to sleep with general anesthetic so that the surgeons can execute spinal fusion while you are unconscious. Various surgical methods have been devised by surgeons for performing spinal fusion surgery. The method your surgeon employs is determined by the position of the vertebrae to be fused, the purpose of the spinal fusion, and occasionally, your overall health and physical characteristics.

The process often entails the following:

Step 1

One of three places—your neck or back immediately over your spine, on either side of your spine, or in your abdomen or throat so that the surgeon can access the spine from the front—will be cut by the surgeon in order to obtain access to the vertebrae that will be fused.

Step 2

The bone grafts that actually fuse two vertebrae together may come from a bone bank or from your own body, usually from your pelvis. If your own bone is used, the surgeon makes an incision above your pelvic bone, removes a small portion of it and then closes the incision.

Step 3

The surgeon inserts the bone graft material between the vertebrae to firmly fuse them together. While the bone graft cures, metal plates, screws, or rods may be used to hold the vertebrae together.

Some surgeons substitute a synthetic material for bone grafts in a few specific situations. These artificial compounds hasten the fusing of the vertebrae and encourage bone development.

What Results can I Expect from Spinal Fusion Surgery?

In most cases, spinal fusion is an efficient way to treat fractures, abnormalities, or instability in the spine. When the underlying reason for the back or neck pain is not obvious, study findings are more contradictory. In many instances, nonsurgical options for treating generalized back pain are just as successful as spinal fusion.

Even though spinal fusion relieves your symptoms, it cannot stop you from experiencing additional back pain in the future. The majority of degenerative spinal problems are brought on by arthritis, which cannot be cured through surgery.

Your surrounding tissues will experience more pressure and stress as a result of immobilizing the fused component of your spine. You may require further spinal surgery in the future since this could speed up the rate at which those sections of your spine degrade.

What is the Recovery after Spinal Fusion Like?

You'll need to stay in the hospital after your spinal fusion for a recovery and observation for three to four days. Your doctor will initially keep an eye on you to see how you respond to the anesthesia and surgery. Your general physical health, and how you respond to the procedure will all influence when you will be discharged from the hospital.

You will be given pain medicine while you are in the hospital. You'll also receive guidance on any new movements you might need to make because your flexibility might be restricted. To walk, sit, and stand safely, you might need to pick up some new skills. Additionally, it can take a few days before you can resume eating solid food as usual.

You might need to wear a brace after you leave the hospital to maintain the alignment of your spine. You might need to wait until your body has bonded the bone into place before returning to your regular activities. It could take up to six weeks or more to fuse. Physical therapy may be advised by your doctor to help you build back strength and learn safe movement techniques.

It will take three to six months for a spinal fusion patient to fully recover. Your age, general health, and physical condition all have an impact on how quickly you recover and can resume your normal activities.

Frequently Asked Questions

Spinal fusion surgery is a serious surgery and is done by a well qualified orthopedic surgeon or a neurosurgeon. Because the surgery is extensive, the surgeons frequently bring a complete surgical team with them.

Spinal fusion has a 70 to 90% success rate, depending on the problem it is addressing.

In most cases, spinal fusion is an efficient way to treat fractures, abnormalities, or instability in the spine.

If at all possible, avoid bending following lumbar fusion because doing so might hinder the healing process and potentially undo the work that has already been done.

Less than 25% of the spine's overall mobility would be lost, even in rare situations where three or four levels of the spine are fused; nonetheless, this would not have an impact on a person's ability to carry out the majority of daily chores.

There aren't many risks and side effects specific to a spinal fusion procedure, however the following are worth addressing.

  1. Limited Movement - A spinal fusion procedure may be able to increase your mobility in some cases where pain is severely restricting it. Other times, a part of your spine loses flexibility because two vertebral pieces are joining together. Most people are willing to give up some of their spine's flexibility if it means they will experience minimal or no pain.
  2. Complications - As with any procedure, there is a chance for problems, such as bleeding, nerve injury, or problems with the anesthetic. The surgical problems are closely monitored and limited by surgeons.
  3. Persistent Pain - Your pain may not completely go after spinal fusion. The operation may assist people with scoliosis or similar spinal curvature issues to prevent further curving, but it might not be able to relieve all of your pain. You could have some pain and discomfort even after spinal fusion.

There are many ayurveda treatments available in India which have successfully treated people with spinal problems. You can share your reports with us and we shall get them evaluated by expert Ayurveda doctors to advise if ayurveda treatment is a good option for your spinal problem.

After spinal fusion surgery, most patients have no activity limitations by 6 to 8 months.
