All surgeries have some form of risks associated with them, however since plastic surgeries are elective procedures, we are very careful while choosing our patients and try to make sure that the patient is physically and mentally fit to undergo the procedure. We also conduct thorough medical evaluations to assess their candidacy for surgery and ensure they are in good health to undergo the procedure safely. Besides this, we have stringent infection control policies and other protocols pre/ peri and pos-operative in place, to minimize the risks of surgery. Nonetheless, seroma, hematoma, numbness, infection, poor wound healing etc. are the common complications associated, which can be minimized to a great extent.
Recovery periods for various procedures vary. Non-invasive cosmetic procedures like Botox & dermal fillers have zero downtime, whereas recovery period for minor procedures done in Local Anesthesia can be a few days. Procedures like tummy tuck, face lift, breast surgeries etc have longer recovery periods and call for some precautions.
Like I mentioned earlier, you need to be in sound physical and mental health before your surgery. Preferably, the patient should be at/ near their ideal body weight, especially for body surgeries. We thus advise our patients to have a healthy lifestyle- take a high protein, low carb, low fat diet and indulge in some form of exercise. You basically need to take a balanced diet, stay hydrated, get adequate rest, and avoid excessive alcohol consumption. Smoking is a complete no-no, atleast 2 weeks before and after the surgery.
Also, take time to mentally prepare yourself for the procedure and recovery/ downtime, especially if you are travelling overseas for your surgery. Maintain realistic expectations and stay positive.
We mostly use Local and General Anesthesia. Local anesthesia is used for minor surgical procedures like scar revision, mole or lesion removal, blepharoplasty etc. while General Anesthesia is preferred for the major/ bigger surgeries, as it is very convenient for the patient. With the availability of new generation of drugs, GA is completely safe and recovery quite fast.
Post-operative care following cosmetic surgery is crucial for ensuring optimal healing, minimizing complications, and achieving the best possible results. We generally keep our patients in the hospital anywhere between 1-4 nights after the surgery, depending on the type/ extent of surgery done- 4 days in cases where we do extensive, multiple surgeries. The patient gets 24*7 nursing and medical care durind this time. This is especially helpful for our overseas patients.
At the time of discharge, we give clear instructions on wound care, activity restrictions, medications and other precautions to be taken. Generally all our patients have at least 2-3 follow ups before they fly back home, to assess their recovery and make sure they are recuperating well.
Adhere closely to the post-operative care instructions given by your surgeon after the surgery. Maintain a healthy lifestyle in the long run- adopt a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains to support overall health and skin quality. Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water and limit alcohol consumption. Avoid smoking as much as possible. And last but not the least, manage your stress levels and stay positive.
Yes absolutely, plastic surgery can correct or improve previous surgical procedures or imperfections, depending on the specific circumstances and goals of the patient. It is however crucial that the patient has realistic expectations from the revision surgery and the surgeon and patient are on the same page.
